We are excited to welcome the Chelmsford community to a special event celebrating the relocation of our state-of-the-art SpaMedica eye hospital. The event will be held on Saturday 19 July 2025 at Buckenham House, Coval Wells, and promises a mix of entertainment and information about our NHS eye care services.

Meet Bargain Hunt Star Kate Bliss

Visitors will have the chance to meet Kate Bliss, star of TV’s Bargain Hunt and Antiques Road Trip, at our pop-up ‘Valuation Station’, where she will be appraising visitors’ treasures from 12pm to 1pm.

The day begins at 11am with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the new site. Guests can also enjoy free ice cream, refreshments, and a fun ‘Spin the Wheel’ giveaway with prizes to be won.

Improving Eye Care Access in Chelmsford

The new hospital location is just an eight-minute walk from Chelmsford train station, making it easier for local patients to access high-quality NHS eye care services.

Chelmsford resident Audley Byfield, a retired electronics technician who underwent cataract surgery with us, shared his experience:

“Before the surgery, my vision was so bad it was like looking through a net curtain. Now, I can read, watch TV, and even repair old watches again – without my glasses. My confidence is back and I’m over the moon. The whole procedure is quick, painless, and SpaMedica is brilliant. I take my hat off to the team – absolutely amazing!”

Supporting Local Patients

Anna-Marie Tyler, SpaMedica Chelmsford Hospital Manager, highlighted the importance of accessible eye care:

“With over 19% of Chelmsford’s population aged 65 and above, this hospital helps meet rising demand for age-related eye care – which is key to preserving independence and quality of life.

We’re right in the heart of the city, helping support the NHS to reduce waiting times for a range of eye conditions. The good news is we can offer cataract surgery within just four to eight weeks of referral, compared to a national target of 18 weeks.

We’re very proud of the feedback we’ve received since opening in the area. In fact, 97% of patients who have reviewed SpaMedica Chelmsford on the NHS website have given us a five-star rating.”

Our Commitment to Patients

SpaMedica recently became the first healthcare provider in the UK to offer free, unrestricted transport for NHS cataract patients, improving equity of access for people from all backgrounds.

We currently operate 64 hospitals across the UK, supporting faster diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions, including cataracts, posterior capsule opacification, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma.
