NHS-funded cataract surgery, closer to home in Wales.

Find your nearest SpaMedica hospital

If you live in Wales, you may be able to choose from several SpaMedica hospitals depending on where you live.

Our Swansea hospital is our main base in Wales. We also have four hospitals in England, located on or close to the Welsh border, which treat patients from Wales.

One of these hospitals may be closer to you than travelling to Swansea, so it’s worth checking which SpaMedica hospital is most convenient for you.

Enter your town or postcode to find your nearest SpaMedica hospital.

Working with NHS Wales

If you’re referred to us by NHS Wales, your treatment is fully funded by the NHS, so there’s nothing for you to pay. We work with NHS health boards across Wales to provide high-quality eye care, following NHS standards throughout your treatment.

“By providing services closer to home, SpaMedica has helped reduce travel times for Welsh patients, making access to treatment more convenient and less stressful. By working together, we continue to deliver safe, effective care and to improve services for the people of Wales.”

Referrals

While patients in England are currently able to choose where to have their cataract treatment, if you live in Wales, your Local Health Board will make that decision for you.

You can find details of your Local Health Board on the NHS Wales website. As all NHS Wales referrals are managed by your Local Health Board, SpaMedica is unfortunately unable to accept direct referrals for treatment from your optician or GP.

Our hospitals in Wales are registered with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, the independent inspectorate and regulator of healthcare in Wales.

For Optometrists

We value the important role community optometrists play in identifying cataracts, supporting patients and helping them understand their treatment options. We’re committed to providing high-quality, consultant-led cataract care for patients referred to us through the appropriate pathways.

We understand that NHS cataract pathways in Wales differ from those in England, with Local Health Boards managing referrals. We aim to provide clear information about our services and hospitals to help you support your patients throughout their eye care journey.
