Paul Smith-Storey, a painter and familiar face from Channel 4’s Narrow Escapes, recently shared his cataract surgery experience at SpaMedica Haydock. From blurred vision and difficulty with daily tasks to painting with clarity again, Paul’s journey shows the powerful impact of cataract treatment.
Paul began to notice his vision fading at the start of 2023. As an artist and someone who lives on the canals, his eyesight wasn’t just a minor inconvenience – it affected every part of his lifestyle. From painting to watching TV and reading, everyday activities became difficult. After visiting his optician, cataracts were confirmed in both eyes and he was referred to SpaMedica.
At SpaMedica Haydock, Paul received cataract surgery on both eyes. He described the care as “fantastic” and praised the cleanliness, friendliness and reassurance offered by the team. Each stage of the process was explained clearly, helping him feel confident and supported throughout.
“On the journey back from my second surgery, I looked out across the canal and I could see the ripples in the water. It was like someone had switched the lights back on. I was amazed.”
Following surgery, Paul has returned to painting and life on the canals with renewed confidence. He can now clearly see detail on the canvas and enjoy his surroundings in a way he hadn’t been able to for some time. He also appreciated the excellent aftercare.
Paul’s story is a reminder of how cataract surgery can restore more than just vision. It brings back independence, joy and quality of life. He encourages anyone experiencing sight changes not to delay in seeking treatment.
