Referral – how do I get a referral for cataract surgery?

To get a referral for cataract surgery, you should visit your optician, who can assess your eyesight and confirm whether you are eligible for treatment. You have the right to choose where your cataract surgery is carried out, including an NHS hospital, an independent hospital, or a private clinic. Many independent providers carry out NHS-funded cataract surgery, so choosing one does not necessarily mean you will have to pay. If you have a preferred provider, let your optician know so they can make the appropriate referral, or ask for guidance if you are unsure which option is best for you.
