Bad back - can I have cataract surgery if I have a bad back?

This will depend if you’re able to lie flat on your back in a supine position or not. As cataract surgery has to be performed while you’re lying down to avoid the risk of complications associated with performing the procedure in a sitting position, if you’re unable to lie flat for the duration of the surgery (typically around fifteen minutes), we won’t be able to proceed with your operation. If you’re worried about your ability to lie flat, we can perform a bed test during your pre-operative assessment to determine whether the position you’ll be in for your surgery will be comfortable for you. Unfortunately, if you’re in too much pain to lie flat, we will have to refer you back to your optician, who will be able to discuss alternative options with you.
