Cataract Surgery

A cataract develops when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, causing blurred vision, glare from lights and difficulty reading or driving. Cataract surgery is a quick, safe procedure that replaces the cloudy lens with a clear artificial lens, helping you see more clearly again.

Is cataract surgery right for me?

You may benefit from surgery if you’re experiencing blurred or cloudy vision, difficulty driving at night, increased glare from lights, or colours that appear dull or faded.

What to expect

You can expect a comprehensive assessment followed by a day-case procedure, which usually takes around 20 minutes and is performed under local anaesthetic using eye drops.

YAG Laser Treatment

Sometimes after successful cataract surgery, the thin membrane behind the new lens becomes cloudy. This is a common condition called posterior capsule opacification (PCO) and can cause vision to become blurred again. A YAG laser capsulotomy creates a small opening in this membrane, allowing light to pass through clearly and improving vision.

When might I need YAG treatment?

You may be suitable for treatment if you experience blurred vision returning after cataract surgery, increased glare, difficulty reading or driving, or vision becoming cloudy months or years after your surgery.

What happens during treatment?

  • Quick outpatient procedure
  • Laser treatment usually takes 5–10 minutes
  • Minimal discomfort
