“I said ‘Is there anybody to hold your hand?’ and one nurse held my hand and made me feel at ease and I’d like to tell others there’s absolutely nothing to worry about.”
On Thursday 28th March we announced the achievement of a key milestone at one of our ten hospitals – the treatment of one thousand patients at our new facilities in Birmingham.
The state-of-the-art hospital located in Five Ways, Birmingham opened in June 2018. Since opening the team have conducted over 1,500 surgeries on 1,000 patients; with more than half of the patients requiring surgery on both eyes.
The occasion was celebrated by all patients and staff with Kathleen Glynn, aged 77, from Sutton Coldfield, being the 1000th patient to receive treatment at the SpaMedica eye hospital.
Kathleen’s story is familiar to many patients, whose eyesight is affected by cataracts and have trouble with day-to-day activities. After a visit to her opticians she was told that her vision was impaired by cataracts and without cataract surgery she would no longer be able to drive. Kathleen was referred to SpaMedica in January 2019, had her eye surgery on 27th February and was thrilled to hear that her vision had improved at her post-operative appointment.
Kathleen was delighted to be presented with a certificate to celebrate the occasion. Praising the SpaMedica team, Kathleen commented, “Everybody has been fantastic. From when you come in, to when you walk out, everybody’s just brilliant. I would recommend SpaMedica to anybody who wants their cataracts doing. When I went to SpaMedica, I said ‘Is there anybody to hold your hand?’ and one nurse held my hand and made me feel at ease and I’d like to tell others there’s absolutely nothing to worry about.”
“To have reached one thousand patients in nine months is truly an exciting milestone for us,” said Emma Streete, Area Manager for the Midlands. “We pride ourselves on the care we provide to each and every one of our patients and it means a lot to us that we are improving vision and, ultimately, the quality of life for thousands of patients. Today we celebrate both our dedicated Birmingham team and the patients they care for every day.”
“Our SpaMedica Birmingham hospital is successful because of our incredible teamwork, dedicated employees and our connection to hundreds of community optometrists across the region,” Emma Streete said. “Thanks to the SpaMedica Accredited Partner Programme, about 70% of our patients are able to attend their post-operative assessments at their local opticians and be seen by their community optometrists.”
Here at SpaMedica we have seen rapid growth since the opening of our first hospital in Manchester, 11 years ago. We now provide ophthalmology services across ten hospitals across Yorkshire, the North-West and the Midlands, with three further hospitals opening in April, including our first in the South-East. SpaMedica deliver excellent outcomes and best-in-class services to our patients, maintaining high patient satisfaction scores, which is evidenced by the extensive praise we receive on the NHS UK website. 99% of patients rate SpaMedica as a 5-star service provider, demonstrating our commitment to delivering a consistently high level of service.
