Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are used for wrinkle and line reduction and also for adding volume to areas where nature has been unable to sustain youthful collagen and fat. They are particularly useful for permanent wrinkles or lines that are present during rest. We also use dermal fillers to augment lips for definition and volume

Fillers consist of a non-animal, biodegradable gel based on a natural substance called hyaluronic acid (HA).  It is almost identical to the HA naturally found in the body and it works together with the body’s own HA to create volume and fill in lines by binding water to lift and restore your skins natural elasticity and volume. The results are instantaneous and produce a long-lasting, natural enhancement that is both gentle and safe to your skin.  Results typically last between 6 – 12 months.

All skin types are suitable for fillers. Small fine lines are equally amenable to treatment as deeper furrows. The treatment is comfortably undertaken with gentle topical anesthetic and can be completed in 20 – 30 minutes. Occasionally some redness and bruising may occur that can be covered with makeup immediately after treatment.  Patients are able to resume normal routine activities immediately after treatment.

We use a number of different type of fillers depending on your individual requirements. We use Restylane commonly due to its excellent safety record and effective results.

Fillers can be used for a number of indications:

  • static wrinkles - forehead and glabellar lines, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lip lines and crows feet

  • lip volumisation - we only use hyaluronic based products for the lip to avoid the risk of allergy and granuloma formation

  • facial volume restoration - cheek bones, jaw lines, nose augmentation

  • skin hydration - we use Vital to improve the turgor of skin to give a more youthful complexion

The following brands of filler are available at spaMedica:

  • Juvederm
  • Restylane
  • Beletoro
  • Radiesse
  • Novobel

FAQs

What is Restylane®?
Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic filler placed in the second layer (dermis) of skin that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate facial wrinkles, folds, scars, or tissue loss.

What is Restylane made of?
Restylane is cosmetic dermal filler composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid, one of the natural components of the dermis. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is a crystal-clear gel called NASHA. NASHA is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid.

How is Restylane different than other hyaluronic acid-based products?
Unlike rooster-derived hyaluronic acids and bovine collagen products, Restylane is free from animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmissions or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins.

What should patients do prior to treatment?
Restylane requires no pre-testing, but you should take a few precautions before being treated. Avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Celebrex, Mobic), herbs (such as St. John's wort, Ginger, Garlic), or high doses of Vitamin E supplements or Omega-3 fatty acids 1
week prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence.

Is Restylane safe?
Yes. Dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons have used Restylane since 1996 worldwide. Restylane has a highly favorable safety profile. It's composed of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the human body. Restylane is fully biocompatible. There is limited risk of animal-based disease transmission or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins. No allergy testing is required before use. The most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve in less than seven days.

Can Restylane be used anywhere on the face?
Restylane has been used in more than 3 million treatments in over 70 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles. It is commonly used on the face, lips, chest and hands.

How long does Restylane last?
Restylane is proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Restylane effects generally
last for about six months. The unique NASHATM technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect until the
injected material is nearly gone. Most patients find it lasts longer as much of it persists well after 6 months.

How often should I have Restylane treatments done?
Treatments are typically scheduled at 6 to 9 month intervals.

How is Restylane different from Botox®?
Restylane is a natural, cosmetic filler. In contrast, Botox is a drug that blocks nerve transmission to and
relaxes the underlying muscles. Many patients have been very pleased after receiving treatments with both
products.

Do the injections hurt?
Restylane is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultrafine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and results are practically instantaneous.

How much do Restylane treatments cost?
Restylane is a customised procedure based on your specific needs, so the cost will vary from patient to patient. In general, the cost of Restylane should be comparable to the cost of similar procedures. Because Restylane is long lasting, it may be very economical over the long term.
